What Happened To Loki In ‘Avengers: Endgame’?

This post contains massive spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame has been in theaters for just over a week, and it hasn’t stopped breaking records since opening night! From earning the top spot for Thursday’s numbers to breaking $1 billion in only 5 days, it’s clear that Endgame is delivering on its promises. It’s as epic and emotional as we hoped.

But the fourth Avengers film, as incredible as it was, left quite a few questions. And all of those questions are thanks to the tricky business of time-travelling. Before we continue, we’d like to remind you again that there are major spoilers for Endgame ahead, so proceed at your own risk!

Going into the film, any Marvel fan could have told you that time travel was going to be involved. But that didn’t stop Endgame from providing massive twists, like Thanos revealing that he destroyed the Infinity Stones, followed by Thor chopping his head off, all in the first 20 minutes! It certainly provided a complication, but the Avengers were determined. They calculated that if they were able to jump back to specific moments in the past, they could grab the stones, return to the present, and use them to bring everyone back! Of course, this is a lot easier said than done.

As you know, our heroes succeeded in retrieving the stones. But their mission complicated their reality in countless ways. Bruce, Tony, Steve, and Scott all traveled back together to the battle of New York. Steve was set to retrieve Loki’s staff, which contained the Mind Stone, while Tony and Scott worked together to attain the Tesseract, AKA the Space Stone. This, of course, left Bruce to retrieve the Time Stone from Doctor Strange. But what he didn’t know was that Stephen Strange was not yet practicing the mystic arts, which meant that the Ancient One was still the protector of the Stone. And with her help, Bruce was able to realize that taking the Stones out of these realities would create alternate realities, ones that were much darker than the existing one. But as long as they returned the Stones back to the moment they were taken, all should be well.

This is where it gets complicated.

You see, while Bruce and Steve succeeded in retrieving their Stones, Loki got to the Tesseract before Tony and Scott had a chance. In fact, he was able to steal it because of their interference! Still bound, Loki grabbed the Space Stone and vanished into thin air. Of course, Tony and Steve were able to go back many years previous to steal the Tesseract, later returning it to that point in time, but the damage had already been done. While they still succeeded in bringing everyone back to life, they couldn’t reverse the events that led to Loki stealing the Tesseract.

So, what exactly does that mean for the God of Mischief?

Fans were distraught when the character was choked to death by Thanos at the beginning of Infinity War, and the events of Endgame have given people hope that the character’s fate may have been changed! But we’re not so sure that’s the case. After all, Avengers: Endgame, above all else, is a conclusion. It’s the end of the line for many of our heroes, which makes us think that if Loki was going to be resurrected, it would have been teased in this film, or at the very least in a post-credits scene. And since it wasn’t, we have a sinking feeling that the events of Infinity War still took place. In this reality, Loki is most likely still dead. But thanks to Endgame, we’re no longer dealing with just a single reality.

We know that Marvel and Disney are currently working on a series all about the God of Mischief, but the plot has been kept under wraps. Perhaps this is why! If we had to guess, we’d say that this new series is going to focus on Loki’s adventures in this alternate reality, and how it leads him back to the current timeline! While we would have loved to see his fate reversed, we’ll take what we can get. Not every character was so lucky, after all.

Avengers: Endgame Is In Theaters Now.
