“I keep telling everybody they should move on. Some do. But not us.”-Captain America
After two hours of watching all of our heroes fight for their lives and for the lives of every being in the universe, we were all shocked when Thanos managed to snap his fingers. The theater was silent as the truth sunk in. Thanos won. Our heroes failed. And the cost was too high to bear.
Infinity War did what we never thought Marvel would dare to do. It killed off half of the MCU’s characters in one shot. Marvel went dark. But sometimes, the stakes have to be raised. That’s what makes any film or show so successful, the element of surprise. And Infinity War was certainly not lacking in that department. But it begged the question…are these deaths permanent? Some of them, perhaps. We have a feeling that Avengers: Endgame will have more than its fair share of loss. Nothing proves that more than the first trailer, which dropped early Thursday morning.
The emotional trailer begins with Tony Stark. Only fitting, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe really began with him. The trailer flashes back, in black and white, to the first Iron Man film, after he escapes the cave and dons the Iron Man suit. Tony voices what we’re all thinking; it seems like a thousand years ago.
More flashbacks of our heroes follow, all in black and white. From Steve Rogers when he first tried to enlist, before he became Captain America, and Thor, before Asgard was destroyed, before his father was gone, before his power and the responsibility that came with it was truly understood. We remember what the MCU used to be. It seems so innocent now, compared to what it has become. And our heroes feel it now more than ever. There is more than one moment in this trailer when they look completely and utterly defeated. But despite everything, they’re not ready to give up.
Our heroes are suiting up, some of them for perhaps the last time, ready to give it their all. We watch as they arm themselves with their weapons. Guns, bows, shields, hammers, and all, they’re ready for the fight of their lives. The trailer takes a new tone as the Avengers suit up, as a new mantra forms.
“Whatever it takes.”
They aren’t just suiting up in their normal gear, either. No, the Avengers have new suits, each made of the exact same material. Perhaps they’re planning to go subatomic? Either way, Earth’s mightiest heroes are more determined and united than ever before. And they aren’t giving up without a fight.
And yes, a certain new Captain might make an appearance at the very end of the trailer. Pay close attention.
