How Ant-Man And The Quantum Realm Will Undo Thanos’ Snap In ‘Avengers: Endgame’

The Ant-Man films were so much more important than you thought.


You could’ve heard a pin drop in every single theater when Thanos snapped his fingers. It was the one move we were all terrified of, but equally sure that Marvel would never let happen. Turns out, we were wrong. We watched in horror as some of our favourite superheroes turned to dust, both on Earth and on other planets. The destruction was nothing short of shocking.

But all hope is not lost, despite the sorrowful, despairing tone Infinity War left us with. And the answer is handed to us on a silver platter in the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame. But if you haven’t been keeping up with the films, you may be a little behind, so let us walk you through it.

While the majority of the Endgame trailer is dark and dire, the ending brings a ray of hope with the reappearance of Scott Lang. If you didn’t know he was missing, you probably didn’t see Ant-Man and the Wasp, so let’s recap. Scott and Hope spend the majority of Ant-Man and the Wasp trying to rescue Hope’s mother, Janet, from the Quantum Realm. The Quantum Realm has appeared in both Ant-Man and Doctor Strange, and is an alternate dimension that can only be accessed via magic/mystical energy using Sling Rings, or extreme subatomic shrinking, which we see in the Ant-Man films. But the Quantum Realm is not to be taken lightly. It is a dangerous dimension where anything is possible, where both time and space become irrelevant. One could, in theory, become trapped and lost for eternity, which is what Hope fears happened to her mother. 

But by the end of the film, they manage to extract Janet from the Quantum Realm. Everything seems to be ending on a happy note. Until the infamous post-credits sequence.

In the post-credits scene, Scott Lang travels to the Quantum Realm with a device that can extract Quantum Energy. And knowing that both space and time become irrelevant in this dimension, the particles and energy could be the key to something like time travel. This very fact is what makes the Realm so dangerous. Janet warns Scott to avoid time vortexes at all costs while in the dimension (we’ll come back to this). Scott goes in with the device, but while in the Quantum Realm, Thanos snaps his fingers, and Hope, Janet, and Hank are all victims, leaving Scott unable to come back.

This is where the Endgame trailer becomes very hopeful. Scott Lang comes to visit Captain America and Black Widow shortly after Thanos’ snap, looking very much alive and back in our dimension. This is important for so many reasons. One, it demonstrates Scott’s power, as it is was thought near impossible to escape the Quantum Realm on your own. Two, perhaps Scott succeeded in collecting Quantum Energy. If so, it will be the key to undoing Thanos’ terror. If not, well, Scott could always go back in and retrieve some.

We also need to examine the time vortexes that exist in the Quantum Realm. Is it possible that Scott did in fact come across one? Rumor has it the Quantum Realm will play a part in Captain Marvel, so perhaps Scott will appear in the film as well? Is it possible a time vortex will be used to go back moments before Thanos snapped his fingers and defeat him right then and there? Or will they go back further, and undo every death that happened in Infinity War, including Loki and Gamora’s? With the Quantum Realm, anything is possible. But we’ll have to wait for April to know for sure.
