There’s a reason you always hear people saying that long distance relationships are hard. They are. Whether you’re cities, states, or countries apart, long distance is difficult to make work, even when you love each other. And eventually, a time arises when you have to look to the future, and ask the heartbreaking question, “Is a future with you possible?” This is the premise of Us.
Us is a short film written and directed by British YouTuber/Filmmaker Will Darbyshire. This short is Darbyshire’s directorial debut, and tells the story of a long-distance couple driving back to the airport, with their inevitable and painful goodbye looming over them. And when Sam asks Jon if he’d ever move, a heartbreaking conversation arises where the two are forced to confront the possibility that their relationship may never work long-term.
Us is an extremely intimate short, not only in its concept, but also in how its filmed. You can feel the tension oozing out of the car, the nearly overwhelming sense of claustrophobia as things get more and more heated. And the hope and worry hanging like a storm cloud over our protagonists heads as they wonder not only what the future holds, but if this perhaps may be the last time they see each other.
There’s an honesty in Darbyshire’s storytelling and filmmaking that makes this short so powerful and so captivating. Us is unapologetically, painfully real. And the actors, Lucinda Dryzek and Laurence Ubong Williams, give equally truthful performances. There isn’t so much as a moment of dialogue or a single glance that feels forced or fake. A true triumph when you consider that the entire short really only takes place during one conversation. But from the first frame to the last, you won’t be able to tear your eyes away.
Though only just over 10 minutes long, this film takes us on a journey both melancholic and sweet. Something that will most certainly stay with you long after you’ve finished it, and may even have you reaching for a tissue. Darbyshire has a true talent, and I cannot wait to see what he does next. If it’s anything like Us, we’re undoubtedly in for a treat.
